If the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) decides sulfide mining in this area is unacceptable—as it did in 2016—no federal nonferrous mineral leases could be granted for 20 years.
Your comments are needed both to support the 20-year ban on sulfide mining in the Superior National Forest lands near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (“BWCA”) and to request environmental review that exposes the reasons why mineral withdrawal is needed to protect BWCA lakes, rivers, and streams; wilderness, forest, and wetlands ecosystems; recreation-based economies; and contributions to climate resilience.
Please use the sample comment letter below or edit it to reflect your views more completely. You can learn more here.
Please also participate in a virtual public meeting hosted by the BLM in January 2022. You must pre-register 48 hours in advance if you would like to speak as well as listen, and the agencies will use a lottery system to select who may speak:
Wednesday, January 12, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (CST)
Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM (CST)
Tuesday, January 18, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM (CST)
There are no officials for you to contact on Email.
Thank you for helping to protect the Boundary Waters from sulfide mining!
